Husband abandons wife, triplet

A middle age woman, Beatrice Onyeka, who gave birth to triplets has been abandoned by her husband at the Stella Obasanjo Women and Children Hospital in Benin City.

The incident was coming barely a week after the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, announced payment of monthly allowance to any woman who delivered triplets between his 75th and 76th birthday.

Onyeka told newsmen who visited the hospital with Igbinedion on Friday that her husband ran away on hearing of the birth of the triplets.

She said her husband was a commercial motorcyclist.

Igbinedion donated N300,000 to Onyeka’s triplets and another set of triplets, to be shared among the six children.

He said the triplets would be paid a monthly allowance for a period of five years, adding that he was felicitating with the less privileged as part of activities to mark his 75th birthday.

Igbinedion promised to open a dedicated account for the triplets and called on well-meaning individuals to pay money into the account as a way of helping the families.

Responding, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Momoh, thanked Igbinedion for the gesture and called on other well-meaning individuals to emulate him.

Also speaking, the father of the other triplets, Mr Eghosa Amasowomwan, thanked Igbinedion for the assistance.
