A study of perinatal mortality at the Ogun State University
Teaching Hospital during the first 30 months (March 1989 to
August, 1991) of the establishment of a separate neonatal
unit was made. One-hundred-and-sixty-two (87.5/1000) of the 1852
deliveries were stillborn and 60 (35.5/1000) of the 1690 live
births died in the early neonatal period. The overall perinatal
mortality rate was 119.9/1000 deliveries. Of stillbirths,
82 per cent occured in unbooked mothers and were diagnosed at
presentation. The major causes of stillbirths were teenage
pregnancy, elderly motherhood, high maternal parity, and
prolonged, obstructed labour. The major causes of early
neonatal death were low birth weight, breech delivery,
and severe birth asphyxia. The need for increased utilization,
improvement, and regionalization of antenatal and perinatal
services is emphasized.

Caroline Johnson returns
caroline before now
Remember Caroline Johnson, the actress that played the role of Uju in Heavensgate but diagnosed with Leukaemia(cancer of the blood) last year and only flown into India few weeks back for further treatment? She is back in the country, bubbling with life again.
Caroline was diagnosed with leukemia in October, last year, when she was five months plus, into the pregnancy of her third child, Oluwatise Johnson.
Following her deteriorating condition, her architect husband, Tony, solicited the support of well-meaning Nigerians to save the life of the dying actress. Help came her way when Nigerians, touched by her condition, donated generously to facilitate her travel to India for further medical attention.
Having successfully undergone surgical operations and returned to the country alive, the mother of three is full of praises as she expresses her profound gratitude to those Nigerians who stood by her, and gave her another chance to live again.
“To everyone who helped…with money, with prayers and by spreading the news around, I say thank you on her behalf. Though, still recuperating, Caroline found strength to write a letter to everyone,” writes on model and publisher Linda Ikeji’s blog.
In an open letter to those who stood by her, while she survived the sickness, Caroline expressed her gratitude to them.
“This is Caroline Johnson. I’m happy to write this letter. Firstly, I would like to let you know that Jesus Christ really lives and I thank God for seeing me through.
I sympathize with those out there who are going through this kind of problem because I have been there. I know what it is to be helpless, hopeless and sick. My prayer is that our good Lord will rise up on your case as He did with mine.
“I am inspired and glad to write you all and with sincere appreciation deep down within me. I would like to say a ‘Big Thank You’ to everyone who has been a part of my medical trip to India and above all, your prayers.
“I arrived safely from India and I am in good health. Before I left as you must have read, I was diagnosed with leukemia (cancer of the blood) and with ventral nervous complication and breakdown to the point that I could no longer walk. I had loss of hearing and vision and at a point, I started having seizures. But today, no single leukemic cell (cancer cell) can be found in me! Praise God!
“Though, I have scars and still on physiotherapy due to a foot drop, I know that my Lord will perfect that which He has started. I will be going back to India in a couple of months for further check up.
“Once again, thank you very much. The good Lord will bless you, keep you, uplift you and continue to show you mercy.
Before I conclude, I thank God for giving me a second chance to be what He wants me to be, the mother to my wonderful children and wife to my ever supportive, loving and caring husband.”

Will you allow your in-laws take over your husband's property?
The advent of Christianity changed some unsavory practices that prevailed in Nigeria especially in the Eastern part of the country where widows were almost treated as lepers when they lose their husbands.
The tradition allowed in-laws take over the properties of a bereaved woman even when such departed man left behind several children. And in some cases, widows were ejected from their homes or subjected to horrifying experiences to prove that they had no hand in the death of their husbands.
Although this practices still exist in some places, education and general right awareness has helped save some widows from the devilish act of their in-laws.
This week some celebrities shares their views on the practice and opined what may happen should they be confronted with such situation.
Enjoy.
Only prayers can do the magic — Biodun Okeowo, Actress
Any woman who’s husband in-laws are after her husbands properties just have to pray and commit everything thing to God. I’m saying this because if she decides to fight them by way of going to court or any other means humanly possible, they may have to kill her. And once they kill her there’s nothing else she can do because the dead can not fight the living unless there are some spiritual manipulations where That is when we Africans say the spirit of the dead is fighting which may not be true so the best thing is to let them be.
I won’t even go to court if I were in her shoes. All I can do is commit everything to God and things will naturally get fixed at the right time. If I fight them and they succeed in killing me in the process, who will take care of my children. I wouldn’t want to expose my children to so much risk and danger by fighting my in-laws and getting killed at the end. A lot of African children have had to suffer for issues like this and when their father and mother are no more, they’re left to themselves. Even these in-laws who claim to be their uncles and aunts will not assist them.
Do you know that some of these children you find sleeping under the bridge today used to be children of some well to do people amongst us, you need to hear their stories to believe what I’m saying. If their mother had left everything to fate after the demise of their father, she would have been alive to see them through in her own little way so my advise still remains that you should leave everything to God.
This subject brings us back to the issue of laziness amongst some of our women, why would any woman fold her hands and expect to eat from her husbands earnings alone. Every woman is expected to have something doing no matter how little. Take up a job if you’re learned, learn a trade or better still learn any kind of skill that interest you.
Do you know that today hair dressers and tailors are making huge amount of money in their profession? What about those women in business, they can afford anything they want with or without the support of any man. All I’m saying is that our women should begin to live up to their responsibility as a help mate and not chop mate to their husbands. Most career women won’t go about fighting their in-laws because they won’‘t have much problem shouldering responsibilities alone.
May be I should also seize this opportunity to talk about other widowhood and traditional practices like forcing the woman to accept her husbands brother as a sex mate whether she likes it or not in the name of tradition. I must confess that women in some parts of this country have suffered so much in the course of mourning their late husbands. In some tradition, the woman is made to sleep with the corpse for certain number of days while others are forced to sleep in the grave yard for two days after his burial to finally convince her in-laws that she did not kill her husband.
I think it’s time for women to come together and provide solutions to some of these issues because if we do not stand up to chat our own course, the men folk will not do it for us and we’ll continue to suffer in anguish.
I’ll got to court if there’s a will — Bhaira Mcwizu, Actress
No man in his right senses will own any property in our world of today without getting his lawyer involved by way of writing a will and that’s the truth.
If my husband had a will before his demise then the next step will definitely be to go to court and take back what rightly belongs to us because I have to bring up the children we had together so I need these properties to help me bring up these children. At least they’ll need shelter which is a basic necessity and so many other basic needs to survive. I believe that with prayers and God on our side success will surely be ours.
They won’t try such with me — Mercy Johnson, Actress
Mercy Johnson, Actress
No, no husband in-law will do that to me abi dem no dey fear face? Nobody can try that with me and that is the truth but any widow who is faced with such trauma should go to court if her husband did not state clearly in his will who owns what.
In this present age of ours any man that has no written will to safeguard his family when he’s no more have already exposed them to all kinds of danger so they should fight as much as they can to recover whatever they can.
No way, it’s our property — Ngozi George, student
No way, I’ll not allow my in-laws do any such thing to me. Why should I give them such opportunity to take away everything I and my husband has worked for.
If I let them take away our property, who will cater for our children? Will they also pay all the necessary bills for me and my children? It won’t be enough to just tear his properties apart so if you want me to allow them take over his properties then they have to sign an agreement to pay all our bills.
Abolish such tradition — Jane Udofia, Teacher
I don’t know why people are interested in taking things that do not belong to them, why would a lazy man who has never bought a one inch block with his money wake up one morning to own another man’s estate in the name of tradition? Such tradition for me should be abolished because it will not only expose the immediate family of the deceased to all kinds of danger but it will also encourage laziness and lead people into killing their brothers.
What else do you expect of one useless fellow who has been smoking and drinking away his whole life. All he needs to do is kill one of his wealthy brothers and he’s made. I won’t let my in-laws come close to my husband’s property for any reason. say you own suggestion out on your comments

Baby sales is lucrative business
Two nurses arrested for harbouring teenage pregnant girls and sale of babies have narrated how they abandoned their nursing profession when they discovered that the business was more profitable than serving in a hospital.
One of the female nurses simply identified as Nkiru, and popularly known in Onitsha, Anambra State where she was arrested as ‘mama Nmesoma’ said she had to abandon her Job as a nurse in an Onitsha based hospital when she realized the kind of money the hospital was making from sale of babies.
Nkiru claimed to have worked at a hospital along Okigwe road Owerri before moving over to the hospital in Onitsha.
She therefore decided to use a room in her three bedroom apartment where she was residing with the husband and their children for the business.
Luck however ran out on her when the Obi of Oraifite alerted the Enugu Zonal office of National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other related matters (NAPTIP) of a young girl who was brought to his palace by his subjects.
The young girl, (names withheld) during interrogation was reported to have said she was trekking to her place in Akwa Ibom; she said that somebody took away her baby at Onitsha and that she was on her way to Aba, from where she hoped to connect Akwa Ibom.
Investigations led NAPTIP to Onitsha where Nkiru was arrested, and five other teenage pregnant girls rescued from her factory.
The girl revealed that her older sister at Ikot Ekpene took her to Onitsha with her baby to stay with Nkiru; the her baby was taken from her and sold for N400, 000.
She fell out with her madam when she started asking about the whereabouts of her baby and was consequently thrown out of the house.
Said she; “whenever they get to my house, they don’t’ go out again; those that have phone I collect it from them; their people don’t know they are here, except those that brought them. A baby died during birth and I put her in nylon and threw her away.”
On her own part, 37-year-old Helen made so much money from the business that she now has two hospitals (baby factories) one at her headquarters in Ishieke, Ebonyi Baby sales is lucrative business

On her own part, 37-year-old Helen made so much money from the business that she now has two hospitals (baby factories) one at her headquarters in Ishieke, Ebonyi state and the other in the Abakaliki town.
She also confessed that her hospital receives and harbours under aged pregnant girls and after delivery sell to prospective buyers.
Helen who claimed to be a nurse said she worked at a hospital in Enugu owned by one Dr. Akunne, who himself is facing trial at an Enugu Federal High Court for the same offence she has been arrested for.
She revealed that she recruited people to source for pregnant girls; she claims to have a baby merchant in Aba, Abia State, a chemist in Enugu and a cleaner in a hospital in Enugu who supply the girls for N10, 000 each.
Like her colleague in Onitsha, Helen collects phones from her girls and deprive them access to the outside world.
One of the four pregnant girls rescued from her hospital said they were fed with okro soup, once a day.

Man caught defiling minors in toilet
Security men yesterday prevented a mob from lynching an elderly man, Peter Ismaila of Kurmi-Gwari, a Kaduna suburb, when he was caught sexually assaulting two primary school pupils in a toilet.
Our correspondent gathered that the suspect lured a 12 year old and her friend of 11 years, all of Kurmi-Gwari, to a toilet at the Kurmi-Gwari primary school and defiled the first one but was caught attempting her friend.
The father of one of them, Mr. Monday Akwi, told Daily Trust at the Kaduna police headquarters where the suspect was paraded, that he had sent his daughter to the market to buy soybeans but on her way, the suspect lured her and her friend with N170. Akwi who said after giving them the money, he took the children to a primary school toilet and there, forcefully defiled her.
“But in the process of forcing his way through the other girl, she screamed, alerting the security guards of the primary school to the scene. They broke into the toilet and arrested the suspect in the act’’, he said. In an interview, Peter Ismaila confessed to the act but denied the claim that he defiled one of the girls before he was caught. “I gave them money before they followed me to the toilet but I did not force them as the police and people are saying. They followed me willingly because of the money I gave them. Please stop saying that I penetrated the girls, I did not, if I did, you would have seen tear and blood in their underwear,’’ he said.
The suspect who works with a private security outfit in Kaduna, said he had a wife and two children and that it was the devil that pushed him to the act. Kaduna State Commissioner of Police Tambari Yabo Mohammed confirmed the incident and the suspect’s confession. He urged parents to always educate their children, especially the girl child on the activities of rapists. He also said that one Elkana Lawrence of Kabala Doki had been arrested for defiling one other girl of the same address.
The police commissioner said the suspect was arrested following a report by the mother of the victim. “The mother, Mrs. Grace Yakubu of Goni close Kabala-Doki, reported to the police last week that her daughter, was not walking properly and that after several questioning, the girl told her that it was Elkana that had been defiling her for sometime but threatened to kill her if she exposed him,’’ he said.

How Doctor, Others Sold Two-month Old Baby For N342,000
The Police in Imo State have charged five persons including a medical doctor, Gordian Nwambara, to court over an alleged abduction and stealing of a two-month-old baby, Chinomso Lawrence. The sixth person among them, Ijeoma Uzochukwu, according to the police, is at large.
Those charged with the doctor before Okigwe Magistrate’s Court I, were Justina Uche, Nkeiru Maduka, Euphemia Alagor and Ann Nwangwu.
Briefing newsmen in Owerri over the matter, Police Area Commander, in charge of Okigwe, Paul Aliu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said the arrest and prosecution of the suspects, followed a petition by the husband of Udoka Lawrence, the victim’s 18-year-old mother that some of his wife’s relations conspired and sold a newly born baby of his wife to unknown persons.
Ironically, one of those arrested in connection with the incident is the grandmother of Udoka Lawrence.
According to Aliu, the complaint, Lawrence Egbuche reported that his wife, Udoka, was delivered of a baby boy at the Divine Maternity Home, Umuokpara Road, Okigwe, on August 7, 2009, adding that no sooner had she delivered the baby than his in-laws took his wife to Mbano where they told her that the baby had died and had been buried.
Following the complaint, the police, according to him, commenced investigations where the suspects were arrested and they later confessed to selling the baby to the medical doctor at the sum of N63,000.
According to Aliu, “Ann, also a medical doctor, and others were arrested and they made statements under caution. Ann further stated that she contacted her lady friend, Alagor, who is into child adoption business, who in turn contacted Nwambara, to whom childless couples normally come to and the baby was sold to one of them and that the sum of N10,000 was given to her as her commission,” he said.
According to him, the child was later re-sold at the cost of N342,000 to a childless couple in Lagos, adding that the boy was handed over to them on August 9, 2009, when they were equally arrested.
The police, following the investigation, travelled to Lagos where they recovered the boy from the couple who had already renamed him Lawrence.
In an interview, the victim’s mother, Udoka, confirmed the statement of the police and stated that following her persistent weeping, her husband who married her shortly after she took-in as a single girl early this year, decided to report the matter to the police.

Nollywood celebrates witchcraft, voodoo, say Kenyan film makers
IS there much witch craft in Nigeria?
This was a shocking question posed to HVP recently in Nairobi by two Kenyan female film makers, who wanted to ascertain why most of Nollywood movies are marked by themes of witch-crafts, voodooism and unrealistic love affairs, which according to them, portray Nigeria as a haven of ferry tales.
The film makers, Mercy Murugi and Janet Kanini-Muiva, respectively expressed shocks and reservations concerning the way and manner, in which these horrible themes are celebrated in the Nigerian movies. They asserted that judging from the Nollywood movies they have watched so far, many Kenyans have the impression that Nigeria is a traditional home of witches.
HVP ran into Murugi and Janet at a function in Nairobi recently. Murugi specializes in making short and feature films as well as documentaries, while Janet is a film maker and TV presenter. In another encounter, the producers said while Nollywood is making waves, as second largest film industry in the world, the movies are relatively unpopular in Kenya.
“Kenyans know more of Hollywood, Bollywood than they do know about the existence of Nollywood,” they stressed, adding that, “ Nigerian films really do apply to Nigerians. Out of the few Nigerian movies we have watched, there is a lot of witch craft, voodoo; references made to witch craft and disparities in Christendom.
That’s not peculiar to Kenyans. We have witch craft here also, but it’s nothing that we should be making films about it, as it’s the case in Nigeria,” one of them said.
Murugi, however, acknowledged how Nigerian film makers have been able to use the big screen to tell the Nigerian story, in such a way that they get people from other countries to become interested in the their own story.
“This is what the Kenyan film makers are trying to achieve: to learn to tell the Kenyan story and make them interesting enough for people from other countries to watch,” he went on.
In Kenya, Nollywood movies are relatively scarce, only house-wives,maids and Nigerians residing in that country may show interest in such movies.
“This is the group of people that watches Nigerian films in Kenya. “Out of 10 people who watch Nollywood films in Kenya, not up to 4 persons will want to procure them for keeps,” he added.
Most Kenyans, according Murugi, prefer to watch Nollywood movies on Africa Magic, which they believe is cheaper, and afford them the opportunity to watch different movies at different times.
For Janet, Kenyans are disposed to watching Hollywood and Bollywood, than they are to Nollywood. “The latest Hollywood movies are brought into the country by Chinese because it’s much cheaper to buy here in Kenya.
Yes, we do watch Africa Magic, but the viewership here is not all that large, ” she stated.
A producer of immense repute, Murugi has worked on projects with National Geographic, Discovery Channel, NBC-Universal, all in Kenya. She co-owns Hot Sun Films, an award-winning film/video production company based in Nairobi. Hot Sun Films, according to her, taps new talents and tells stories from and about people seldom seen on screen.
“We make films to entertain, raise awareness and cause social transformation. Through our non-profit arm, Hot Sun Foundation, we train and develop new talents amongst the youth and the children of the urban slums of Africa. My biggest project yet being the successful production of Hot Sun Films feature film, Togetherness Supreme, which is now on post production, she explained.

Ronke Apampa’s 'Stars on the runway'
Though her first real break on the small screen was on the Nigerian television network soap called 'Schemes' , standing at 6 feet tall, Ronke Apampa started her career in Nigeria as a young catwalkmodel and later as a co-host on a teen oriented television programme on Lagos Television. Modelling took her to Paris for the Nigerian Fashion Show and on her return she decided to try television presenting as a career.
She soon began as a presenter on a show about Nigerians living in London and later got signed to the production/management company R70 World as the presenter of the programme Out and About on BEN TV. Presently Ronke is the presenter and co-producer of the popular Black Variety Show on OBE TV (Sky Channel 159) in the United Kingdom for about four years now, started showing in Nigeria about two months ago. The show is rated the No.1 television programme for Nigerian and African lifestyle, broadcast live from the heart of London.
What exactly is Stars on the Runway all about?
Stars on the runway is a fashion show with a difference featuring 6o celebrities and twelve
designers on one runway. 60 celebrities will be wearing creations made by twelve designers. We chose ten top designers in Nigeria and two Nigeria designers based in Brooklyn. The celebrities were divided equally among the designers, so we have like six celebrities to a designer, making outfit for them.
The reason why we say, it’s a fashion show with a difference is because for the first time in Nigeria, 60 celebrities will be modelling for charity. Secondly, the celebrities are divided into five categories: we have the Divine Divers, Players Ball, Celebrity Couple, Movers and Shakers, Peculiar Pairs.
So it’s just an ordinary show that the models just come on the runway. The categories are fun, Divine.
Divas for example are leading women of style and class in Nigeria, we have the likes of Bianca Ojukwu,Genevieve, Omotola, Yinka Davies and more. Players ball, Kanu Nwankwo, Mr Segun Odegbami, Jim Iyke, Julius Agwu, Kojo Williams. The celebrity couples, we have Olu and Joke Jacobs, Tunde and Wumi Obe, Tunde and Bimbo Oloyede, Lady D and Chalie Boy, Baba Suwe and Omoladu.and the rest of them.. The Peculiar Pears is the one I am not going to reveal because that’s our golden category, I just want people to come and see. Whose idea is this?
It’s my idea but, of course borrowed from different places, I’ve been, because we attend different fashion weeks around the world and we saw what they do, but this has never been done before. Ayo Shonaiya came up with categories, I thought it will be nice to have the
players ball, divine divas instead of just getting people to come on the runway. We both worked together on the project.
What is the objective of staging a show of this magnitude?
The aim is to raise money for an orphanage, for children orphaned by HIV Aids. It is not just about celebrities coming out to start their stuff on the runway, there is more to it. The celebrities are offering their status to add glamour to the event and to help the children.
Why did you think it was necessary to do that, what inspired it? Personally, I have a strong passion for children, not just children, but helping people. I love to help out when help is needed. It’s not because people say it’s good to help, I just feel there is a need to have an
orphanage dedicated to children, orphaned by HIV/Aids.
It’s a global thing now, and it’s really big in Nigeria. I think, there should be more awareness.
Again, every year, we will be giving to different charities, for the first edition, we will be giving it to ‘Support For Africa’ which Patty Boulaye’s charity. I think she is one woman that has a passion for charity, she’s built three clinics so far in Nigeria, The fourth one will be in Cameroon. Hopefully if we have enough money, we’ll build an orphanage and a clinic. Next year, the money might go to Kanu Heart Foundation or the Sickle Cell Foundation.
Who are the designers and what kind of clothes should we expect on the runway?
The show, I tell you, will blow peoples mind and I say this with so much confidence. People will not see something like that in a very long time, its never been seen before and this is what they are going to be talking about for years. There will be other editions, but for this first edition a lot of work has gone into it. Some of the designers: are Modela, Nobel, House of Bunor, Zizi, Lanre Da-silver Ajayi , Okunore Twins, KSLD. Then up and coming Victoria Couture, Ejiro Imostaferi, and Adebayo Jones is making a special appearance as well. There is a twist to it, the celebrities will not be wearing what they used to in their normal life, for instance, there is a male celebrity that will be dressed like a lady on that day, I’m not going to reveal who, there is one that has decided to go old school. The ladies will be
really daring and there is a soundtrack for every celebrity as they step on stage.
As regards entertainment, we have the Creative Academic students, performing a special aids song and a dance troupe performing., we are hoping to bring in Ageli kijo or Sola Ama. It will be hosted by Richard Blackwood and Stella Damasus. Richard Blackwood is a British actor it will be his first time in Nigeria.
What were the challenges you faced getting all these celebrities to be part of the show?
To be honest I think I have been really lucky, they have been very supportive. I think Nigerians are really helpful, in nature, they want to give to charity once they believe you are honest and it’s a good platform for them donate. Most people just say charity and they do not know exactly what it entails some people feel its a way of swindling people . But we live in a society where charity is done like it is supposed to, and once I was able to convince them that we are honest, it was easy getting celebrities to do their measurements, go for fitting and all. Princess Abba Folawiyo has being wonderful, Biola Okoya too, these are people you do not expect to see on the runway, but they will be there.
But getting sponsorship has been a very big problem,it has been very difficult, for Nigerian companies, you need to give them all the time in the world and they have been moving at really slow pace but, I am sure we’ll get there after the first edition, they will understand.

The show will feature twelve designers and about 60 celebrities who will step on the runway to bring comfort to the needy. Ronke speaks more on the forthcoming show, billed to hold in July.

So, when the opportunity came to come into the industry last year, I didn’t hesitate to become a DJ because that’s where I want to stay and showcase my talent.” Queen Pin stated.
Though, it’s about a year that this former undergraduate of the University of Abuja ventured into this esoteric business of Disc Jockeying, her record of accomplishment within that short time is awesome as she has displayed her talent at concerts, eevents and nightclubs, to mention but a few are, Jades Palace, Adeola Odekun, Reloaded, Trick’s Nightclubs tucked somewhere around the Shoprite Mall, Lekki, all on Lagos Island.
You may now wonder how she has managed to scale through the huddles of intimidation from the men folks, the native of Awe in Oyo State but Lagos born DJ said she was only mindful of her ability and was not bothered about the noise around characterized by the pull-her-down-syndrome. Hear her “change is what I am concerned about. Right now, I am getting my priority right, making a mix-tape that will stand the test of time and be applauded in the industry as the first ever female DJ in Nigeria to score such feats. That’s my aspiration and until I get to that level, I am still gonna continue to give my best.” She concluded
Her real name is Olufunmi Jasmine Akinyanju but in the entertainment world she’s known as Queen Pin, a name she got during one of her days as a Chess game player. Interestingly, this black and strong gifted DJ who is gradually becoming relevance face to reckon with is making in grand effort to change the notion of top players in the industry who believe that the wheels of steel is meant for the male gender alone. In the light of this, the beautiful artiste is clamouring for a change and also supporting the course of women who are ready to embrace this act of disc jockeying.
“Before I fell in love with Disc Jockeying, I was always inspired by the artistic ability of people like DJ K-Slay, an international artiste like that. I was fascinated by his drive and the manner he carries his audience along. So, when the opportunity came to come into the industry last year, I didn’t hesitate to become a DJ because that’s where I want to stay and showcase my talent.” Queen Pin stated.

The Bull rages on and on, silently – The trouble with Mike Adenuga Jnr.
The payoff line made famous during this period in America was ‘Be like Mike’. We all wanted to be like Mike even if our chosen sports or means of exercise was limited to a game of chequers on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
There is never a prize for dreaming big but there is always something to be said for those who achieve such dreams.
Michael Niyi Adenuga jnr is fast becoming an enigma in today’s Nigeria. With the unique silence of a raging bull he develops a Teflon-coated outer skin while he creeps into our homes like a thief in the night.
When we consider a truly Nigerian brand, without the trimmings of association with a known foreign brand, without the obvious visibility of a looming bigger company behind it, a brand established from careful thought and positioned to compete, there are few in Nigeria that can stand on their own.
Globacom and the GLO brand stands out and sometimes all on its own.
Today, six years after launch, Globacom introduces the world’s first underwater optic fibre cable that has been solely built by one company rather than a consortium. 10,000 kilometers all under water, providing the opportunity for great advancement in technology and telecommunications for the country in the main and much of West Africa too.
To the ordinary man on the streets, this may mean nothing. To purveyors, professionals and aficionados of technology and telecommunications, this is quite some achievement.
The Bull, Otunba, Dr., the Don, Bel Air, the Guru or any other name Mike Adenuga jnr has been called, quietly rages on and on. I think he should be renamed the Energizer Bunny.
So what is the trouble with Mike?
Mike Adenuga jnr failed to make the Forbes List as a Nigerian or even African.
Mike Adenuga jnr failed woefully to make the list of Nigeria’s 200 biggest debtors.
Most importantly, Mike Adenuga jnr failed to grab the headlines of Nigerian newspapers with the arrival of GLO 1.
This is a country where the negative record-breakers consistently grab our attention while the positive achievers and achievements take a back seat. This is indicative of the psyche of the country and her people.
While there is a stampede by elephants for infamy, other Nigerians like Mike, silently move the nation forward without the accompaniment of the Horns Section of the Heavens.
Who really cares about this step forward in telecommunications? We are probably more interested in how many baths Cecilia Ibru has had since her frolicking with the EFCC and her fellow campers.
I am sure Mike Adenuga jnr has his own personal problems and who hasn’t? Afterall, when the Hunters came calling, the Bull went scampering over the fence and like a ghost in the night, shooo! He was gone! Right now, in business, I would rather have his own issues than mine.
The question is, have we become so battered emotionally that, when achievements that may positively impact millions of Nigerians do take place, we fail to notice or acknowledge such?
Otherwise, has the level of understanding borne out of education and enlightenment dropped so low that progressive achievements are not noticeable or even understood?
Competitors in the telecommunications industry understand quite alright. Globacom is about to corner the largest and fastest growing telecommunications market in the world. If added to this is the crumpled but still useful prize of NITEL, the future of the industry speaks for itself.
Mike Adenuga jnr is about to supplant himself in every household, office and commercial building in Nigeria as Dangote has done with commodities. If you cannot live without a medium of communications plugged somewhere near you, then take a closer look, Mike Adenuga jnr will be there.
The various arguments have been made before. The source of Mike Adenuga’s startup support remains an issue based on conjecture. Quite irrelevant, if you ask me. There have been many more who had the same opportunities and made nothing of them. That in itself makes easy pickings of any counter-arguments.
We have had many years of governance in the Science and Technology and Telecommunications sphere. Huge budgets and plans yet to be executed 40-something years down the line.
The truth is, what Globacom and Mike Adenuga jnr have done is not rocket science. It is a blueprint which exists elsewhere and has been adapted and modified to suit our country. Who asked for the re-invention of the wheel? In this instance copying and modifying does not amount to exam malpractice.
The trouble with Nigeria’s vast number of Mike Adenugas is that they will not put themselves forward to lead the country. They are probably hampered by the notion that leadership is not designed for Nigerians of ability, knowledge and good intentions.
Give me 50 Mike Adenugas of any tribe, sex, religion, state and areas of expertise, add 15 years of commitment to high standards and success in a modified and accountable system. What do you think would emerge?
30 years ago the United Arab Emirates UAE did not exist but for a few camel-racing nomads. 20 years ago Dubai had only one modern building sitting mindlessly in the Arabian desert.
In a country of 150 million, there are many silent raging bulls. Who will step up to the plate? The beast in the meantime is outgrowing the cage and her people are afraid she might become a failed state.
For me Globacon is one of the Best of Nigeria given all considerations. Little surprise that Mike Adenuga jnr comes from a state of the federation that recorded numerous ‘firsts’ in Nigeria.
It will fascinating to see how the industry changes, with trembling competitors and a price war that will benefit the consumer ultimately.
I don’t know what Mike Adenuga jnr drinks for breakfast, or if indeed he has breakfast, but if he cares to share it and if I am to have another son, the chorus in my house shall be ‘Be like Mike’. Big fat ifs to all of that.
What do you think
ALIKO DANGOTE , "PRESIDENT NIGERIA STOCK EXCHANGE"
D&R likes Dangote for enormous amount of investment into business growth and development in the country. Almost every household in Nigeria has an item or items from any of the Dangote Group.
The Obajana Cement Factory is Africa’s largest of its kind and Dangote has extended his group’s business activities into other African countries helping counter the notion that Nigerian companies cannot penetrate other markets.
Capital flight has been a major problem in Nigeria . The likes of Aliko Dangote show you can invest in Nigeria and still make it unto the Forbes List of World’s Richest People.
While the jury is still out on possible conflict issues over his recent election as President of the NSE, do we like Aliko Dangote? You bet.
THE AFROBEAT MASTER "FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI"
Take your pick and you will find it difficult to ignore Fela Anikulapo-Kuti in the annals of Nigerian Music and Political History.
A whole generation was exposed to the possibilities in self-belief and the determination to make a difference and many times against the odds.
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti epitomized the Nigerian Spirit. In life Fela set a standard in Afrobeat Music that is yet and almost certainly will not be attained by anyone else.
Fela did not only impact Nigeria and a generation of Nigerians but his music and performances influenced a great many around the world, including some unexpected places for Afrobeat, like Scandinavia. Like every icon, Fela had his excesses in the battle to ensure the development of the Nigerian against the numerous establishments he went up against.
The Shrine. The Music. Those Dancers. Those wives. The lazing around for international interviews in underpants and painted faces. And….yes.
Could you help but not like Fela even from behind your curtains? You certainly could not ignore him whoever you were.
Many would say Fela was a Prophet way ahead of the times when they look back at the progress or lack thereof that Nigeria has made.
For a man who had ‘death in the pocket’ (Anikulapo) when the grim reaper came, Nigeria, the music world and an entire generation lost a lovable leader.

D'BANJI, THE ENTERTAINER + NIYI TABITI'S WEDDING PICTURES
He calls himself the entertainer...that he definitely is, but beyond that, this 28year old artist and businessman, is a genius. I'm so fascinated with him and so proud of what he's been able to accomplish at such a young age.
About 6/7 years ago I saw this music video by someone who called himself D'banj. The song was titled 'Kiss me again'. I kinda liked it but never paid it much attention. Alot of people didn't pay that young guy much attention then. He even said his parents wanted him to go to school and forget about music, so I guess back then, he didn't get much support from family, friends and music lovers.
One would think the young man would give up and focus on other things, but he must have known what he had inside of him, he must have seen the great future he'll have if he contiued to pursue his dream, so instead of giving up, he traveled to the UK. I really don't know what exactly he did in the UK for the few years he was there. All I know is that he came back in 2005 and this time around, he got our attention.
Not only the attention of music lovers, but captains of industries, State Executives, Governors, the Senate President, even the Oba of Lagos. He made us all recognize him.
His meteoric rise is phenomenal!
But how did he do it? Don't you guys ever wonder? How did he go from an unknown, struggling artist to the greatest artiste in Nigeria at the moment? His first hit single was Tongolo in 2005, how did he rise to the top in three years? From making nothing to making 10million naira a week (according to him), winning numerous awards, including MTV African Artiste of the Year, and also becoming a UN Ambassador.

What took Dapo Oyebanjo from obscurity to greatness? Some say its his talent, others think it's because he carved a niche for himself, some say its maybe his lyrics, while others think he is just blessed.
I think it is all of that put together + hard work, dedication, perseverance, focus, belief and confidence in who he is and what he is capable of. And of course he found someone (Don Jazzy) who believed in him.
This is some of the ingredient we need to be great meaning that anyone of us can be this great or even greater, we just have to have the right ingredient.

Dbanj is not only an artiste and ambassador; he is also an astute businessman. He is the Vice-president of Mohits Records; he is partnering with Bank PHB for an upcoming reality show, and Globacom for the KOKO range of handsets, he recently launched Koko condoms and I hear also that Koko Water is in the works.
Understanding the importance of giving back, he started a foundation - Koko Foundation, where he is helping motherless babies and giving scholarships.

I am sure he has women at the snap of his fingers, but he doesn't go around impregnating them or acquiring mistresses. And anyone who has met him will tell you he is humble, funny, nice and very accommodating.
Best of all, his new album, the entertainer is a masterpiece
Personally, I think this is what it means to be great. I duff my hat for this young man who is teaching us all a thing a two on how to make our lives meaningful.
We can't all be D'banj, we can't all be talented singers or entrepreneurs, but we all can make meaning of our lives and be the greatest we can be, in any field we choose It's really up to us.
Dapo, you are a shining example. We are all proud of you.
Meanwhile I'm sure y'all know that famous blogger and journalist, Niyi Tabiti, got married last weekened...here are some pictures from his wedding. Pix thanks to

Man Bathes In-Law With Acid
A middle-aged woman, Mrs. Victoria Agoro, has been subjected to an acid attack by her daughter’s husband, Chijee Anyalibechi.
Mrs. Agoro is now writhing in pains at the Burns and Emergency ward of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, in Lagos, and doctors say she needs about N300,000 for an urgent plastic surgery on her blistered body.
Because the acidic substance was poured on her, right from her head, one of her eyes has been blinded in the attack and she now only manages to see with the other.
The 45-year old mother got the shock of her life on 6 October, at her Igbogbo Ikorodu, Lagos residence, when her son-in-law, Anyalibechi, emerged late in the night with a bucket of acid and emptied the contents on her.
Anyalibechi’s wife, Abiodun, told SPECTRUM News she was actually the target of the attack by her estranged husband but left her mom’s house, where she had been putting up, for Ibadan on the day of the incident.
Abiodun, fought back tears while narrating the story to SPECTRUM.News, expressing regrets that she ever married Anyalibechi, who turned out to mete out such cruel treatment on her mother.
“Neighbours told me that my husband disguised in an Islamic outfit, and sneaked into my mom’s apartment that night, carrying a full bucket of acid and poured it on my mother from head to toe, with some of it splashing on my sister, Aminat.
“He then tried to escape running into a nearby street, but he was chased by some men who beat him to a pulp before policemen later came to his rescue,” Abiodun recalled.
Abiodun, 22, a student of the University of Abuja, got married to Anyalibechi, 38, in June last year in Lagos and the couple moved to Abuja where they lived together until they separated in July this year.
Anyalibechi claims to be a lawyer, but his wife said he never practiced as one. Rather he was always into one shady deal or the other, which Abiodun soon found out months into their marriage.
“I complained severally on his sleazy ways, but he always had a lie to disabuse my mind each time I challenged him,” Abiodun said.
But at some point in July this year, when Anyalibechi could no longer cover up his tracks, his wife said he accused her of infidelity, and thus said he was no longer interested in their marriage.
“I denied her charge of infidelity but he was bent on ending our union, so he took me down to my mom’s place in Ikorodu and dumped me there.”
Abiodun’s family members, especially her mom, tried to mend fences with Anyalibechi, but he stood his grounds.
He then left his base in Abuja and relocated to Lagos, also in the Ikorodu area, where he started putting up in his friend’s house not too far from the Agoros. It was from where he allegedly plotted the brutal attack on his in-laws.
Asked why he chose to attack her mom and not her, even after he willingly handed her (Abiodun) to her mom, Abiodun said Anyalibechi had, from his nearby base, made several failed attempts to attack her.
“He must have planned to pour the acid on me but because he didn’t find me at home that day, and because he didn’t want the acid to be wasted he turned to my mom instead.
“I don’t know what our offence is but I believe I was his target. Maybe because I found out his secrets.
“He claimed to be what he wasn’t. He is fraudulent and devilish, though I married him and I’m supposed to know him well enough before agreeing to marry him.
“I later found out that the family members he brought to my parents when we were to be married were not his real relatives. He actually hired them,” Abiodun lamented.
Meanwhile, Anyalibechi who escaped being lynched after his acid attack on Mrs. Agoro, but for the intervention of policemen, is now also lying critically ill at the Ikorodu General Hospital.
Policemen at Igbogbo, Ikorodu Division, who first took him into custody, rushed him there when he started bleeding badly from the serious beating he received from the angry mob.
SPECTRUM.News trailed him to his sick bed, where he muttered some words, denying that he ever attacked his in-laws with acid.
Anyalibechi rather claimed to have been kidnapped by some people at gunpoint, blindfolded, and dropped at the entrance to his mother-inlaw’s house, at the same time the acid attack was carried out.
He further claimed that when he managed to get his bearing, a mob soon pounced on him and accused him of carrying out the dastardly act of the acid attack.
When SPECTRUM. News visited the Igbogbo Police Station where the case was incidented, a source just said the case had been transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Panti, Yaba.
SPECTRUM. News however learnt that detectives from the FCID visited the crime scene at the weekend, in furtherance of the investigation into the acid attack.

Inside Lagos Nude Clubs
On the Opebi-Allen axis of Ikeja alone, there are four clubs where young attractive girls bare it all every night of the week. The four nude clubs are Wallstreet, Club Unique, Magic City and Cazzbah. Wallstreet is located at 70B Allen Avenue while Club Uniquen is on Ogundana Street off Allen Avenue. Magic City formerly Ocean Blue, is adjacent to Sweet Sensation Bus Stop Opebi and Cazzbah is adjacent to Opebi Bus Stop. On Fridays and Saturdays of every week, these four exclusive adult spots are filled to capacity with Magic City drawing the biggest crowd because of the ingenuity of the owners especially on Fridays, where sex is practiced on stage by two female dancers who use artificial sex organs to entertain the faithful crowd. Apart from Cazzbah, where the gate fee is N2000 everyday of the week, in the other places, it is N1000 between Sunday and Thursday and N2000 on Fridays and Saturdays. The daily show usually starts at about 8 O’clock and gets to its crescendo around 11 pm when the hall is filled to the brim. The belly dancers cover their bodies with only panties and gradually undress as they dance around a pole until they are stark naked, to the delight of the patrons who show appreciation by throwing money at them. The more money is thrown, the more the exotic dancers display. The halls are generally filled with men and some ladies who come either with other men or with fellow ladies to enjoy the show. A patron can request for a lap dance and pay only N1000. The exotic dancer then sits on his lap, touching him and dancing with the ultimate motive of creating arousal. There are also cabins and VIP rooms where a patron can decide to go a step further with the girl. It costs between N12, 000 and N20, 000 with the dancer collecting 60 percent of the money and 40 percent going to the management. A cabin is a very small room with one chair where the patron sits and the VIP has a large bed, a TV room, a toilet and some condoms. At the VIP room and cabin, phone numbers can be exchanged for further interactions. The exotic dancers are usually between the ages of 18 and 25. Usually tall and light in complexion, they give only their sobriquets. They easily take other ladies to the cabin or the VIP if they can pay. It is the same price for both men and women. The girls resume work at 6 pm. They are free to go wherever they want between 7 am and 6 pm. The drinks and hot meals are usually available and most times, go for between N500 and N10, 000 for the drinks and N1500 to N5000 for the meals. Here, the ladies dance to all kinds of musical rhythms. At Magic City and Wallstreet, adult movies are shown on displayed screens while the ladies are dancing. The show usually ends at about 5 o’clock the next day. Ocean Blue, now Magic City, was shut down last year by the Lagos State Government which claimed that the management of the club was not given a licence to operate a strip club, but the club has now reopened and changed its name and is operating unchallenged by the state government. P.M.News learnt that at Oba Akran, there is a new nude club that opened two weeks ago and is drawing dancers from Wallstreet. In other parts of Ikeja, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, there are several similar clubs which attract mainly young girls in search of money. University students are also among them. As poverty bites harder, more girls, some underage, join the mad dance for easy money. “If I see a better job, I will leave this one, I need money, I have to raise money to go back to school,” one of the dancers told SPECTRUM.News.
MERCY JOHNSON MOVES INTO BOYFRIEND’S HOUSE IN OMOLE
alking about one actress whose name is synonymous to controversy, the name Mercy Johnson will readily come to mind. Her many bad habits which include bed-hopping, abortion, stealing, lies and others have become incurable epidemics that may take only heaven to cure if what we gather about her is anything to be considered.
It was recently rumoured that Mercy aborted a three months old pregnancy for a certain Omole-Estate Lagos based lover called Odi, the report was denied vehemently by the Nollywood diva as purported attempt to dent her image. Sources within Omole have just whispered to us that Mercy, having decided to evacuate her property from Tricia Eseigbe’s Lekki home, due to small misunderstanding between them, she has now moved into Odi’s house in Omole where she now operates from.
Information at our disposal also reveals that Mercy has been finding things so difficult these past months about the many negative reports about her person. Most of these reports, according to a very close friend of the man she was alleged to have stolen some hard currencies from a couple of months back, “Mercy herself is her problem. If they say you’re a thief, you don’t play with another person’s toys.
She loves controversies because she believes without such controversies producers won’t want to call her for a job.” The source told us via telephone. Well, what is actually good for goose may not be the best thing for gander as the bad reports on Mercy has cost her, her privacy amongst others.
If there is anything Mercy is fighting very hard to do is to redeem her dented image as I am told that she now gives out some branded exercise books to some students courtesy her foundation.
Anytime Mercy is not on location working or with her Abuja based lover who held a party for her recently at the Basement Club Abuja be sure of getting her at the Odi’s House in Omole, Lagos.while friends of Odi are of the opinion that Mercy is not the best choice for thier friend, some of them still go behind to woo the girl. meanwhile, some close relatives of Mercy who met her recently were said to have registered their dissapointment when they discovered that their brother's girlfriend, a screen idol for that matter has a very bad skin

Fears in Lagos over influx of strange persons
THE continued influx of strange persons into Lagos has sent the state police command to the drawing board.
Among other measures evolved by the police to ensure that there is no security breach in the state are provision of updated security tips to residents, crackdown on the sale of dangerous weapons in unauthorised places, and close up on persons with suspicious movement.
The state police commissioner, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, who spoke on the development yesterday, urged the residents to be security conscious and to report all suspicious movement and gathering to the nearest police station.
Akpoyibo said the police was disturbed by the trend because most of the persons trooping into the state had no defined mission or means of livelihood.
Also, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to check the rising level of immorality, nudity, indecency and pornography in the state.
In a statement made available to journalists yesterday by Gabriel Osu, the Director of Social Communications, Lagos Archdiocese, Okogie warned youths to be wary of the implications of patronising nightclubs because of the danger inherent in such acts.
Akpoyibo told journalists that the mode of entry of the strange persons had become a concern to his command.
He said: "What I intend to do is to simply provide Lagos residents with updated security advice and tips. This is predicated on our determination to promoting proactive policing propelled by intelligence-driven strategies. The command has observed with deep concern the unusual influx of young men, with no defined mission into Lagos metropolis. These young men, who usually arrive from different parts of the country in large numbers and sometimes in groups of fifties and above, have neither any known place of abode, nor any feasible means of sustaining their stay in the city.
"Their influx and mode of entry into the state have raised some security concerns within the law enforcement circle, thus necessitating close monitoring and surveillance of their activities and lifestyle by the state police command. While the command is conscious of, and will continue to respect the constitutional rights of all citizens to freedom of movement and association, we wish to advise that such rights must be exercised and enjoyed within the confines of the law," he said.
Akpoyibo, therefore, urged Lagos residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious gathering to the nearest police division.
"The command therefore wishes to enjoin all Lagos people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious gathering, assembly or movement within their localities to the nearest police station."
He also warned against indiscriminate display and sale of offensive weapons and other dangerous items.
The police chief said his command had also observed "with concern the indiscriminate display and sale of dangerous tools such as knives, cutlasses, cudgels, scissors, hammers, at traffic jams along major highways as well as inner city roads within the state. Apart from the fact that these hawkers obstruct vehicular and human traffic thereby endangering lives and property, hawking or trading on the highways and, other unauthorised places, is in itself an offence under the relevant state laws. The indiscriminate display of these dangerous items in the streets also makes them easily accessible to criminals and persons with criminal propensities who could use them against the society."
He advised dealers, sellers and hawkers of such items to desist from displaying, selling or hawking them in the streets and highways.
Akpoyibo said persons found violating this order would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant laws of the land.
"In addition, law-abiding Lagos residents are encouraged to desist from patronising hawkers of these implements which could easily be converted to tools of terror. This, we believe, will serve as a strong disincentive to their illicit trade. Finally, with the 'ember months' now with us, we wish to re-assure the people of our determination to ensure a crisis and crime-free Yuletide period. We plead for their continued support, co-operation, prayers and understanding, trusting that God will see us through," he added.
Reacting to the increasing number of nude clubs in the metropolis, Okogie lamented that evil had taken over in the state.
He said: "The way things are going, when girls of between the ages of 15 and 25 dance nude and throw caution to the winds, with boys and men as onlookers, is sending to the society a wrong signal, it is pertinent danger; we are sitting on loaded gun.
"Night clubs are increasing in Lagos, those closed earlier are reopening with impunity with a change of name. I hope this is not making mockery of Lagos as a mega city, city of excellence and city of aquatic splendour"?
To check the ugly situation, Okogie said the state government should not allow brothels to operate nightclubs, while gambling should be outlawed.
Parents and guardians were also charged to curb the excesses of young people.
According to him, "it is contrary to the feelings of the people of this state. They are defying government in all intents and purposes. Government must do something now to stem the tide of the evil sweeping across the state. Some prominent persons are among them, some top civil servants are with them, and they lure innocent girls into prostitution. Too bad! Government must look into the immorality in the state urgently before this evil overtakes us."

Physical disability, a barrier to true love?
Physical disability in the past was seen as a kind of disease but not any more as those whom we refer to as the physically challenged are gradually becoming the celebrities of our time. The question Spectrum Magazine tried to look at this week is whether physical disability can be a barrier to true love and these are my findings.

— Lisa Onu, Actress
The truth remains that most Nigerians will not like to associate themselves with any person who is physically challenged not to go as far as marry them. But what annoys me with some of these physically challenged people is that most of them reluctantly remain lazy in the name of physical disability which makes them remain within a particular class.
I tell you that they’re actually the ones who condemn themselves even before another person does. When I walk on the streets and see these physically challenged people who have surrendered to begging as if they were not created in the same image and likeness of God as me and you, I get furious.
I want to tell you something that will surprise you now and that is that I attended the same school with the physically challenged. Yes, I went to a missionary school that accommodates even the physically challenged and in that school, we were tutored together, there was no segregation.
The school provided a platform for all, they were taught to read and write, they were equally given special training skills. These skills ranged from tailoring, shoe making, hair dressing and all kinds of craft.Back in my school days, most of these physically challenged people were more intelligent than some of us who thought we are complete.
Infact they made sure that they were always taking the first positions in class so that there won’t be anything we could use against them. I grew up around physically challenged people so I don’t see them from a different dimension. I see them like any other human being in the society so I can fall in love with a physically challenged man because they’re normal people like you and I. Their sense of reasoning is perfect.
The fact that he’s blind or crippled does not affect his brain. Today physically challenged people are musicians, actors, authors, pastors and everything you can think about. Those who think that they’re helpless because they’re disabled in one way or the other are just wasting their time and being lazy for all I care. I tell you some of the IT personnel in most organisations today are people on the wheel chairs but they’re working and earning a decent living.
I equally know of some people on the same wheelchair who’re journalists so there’s no excuse whatsoever to be daft in the name of being physically challenged. Whether you’re blind, deaf and dumb or crippled, there’s always some kind of job that you can fit into. If you have the opportunity of going to school to become a graduate, please do and if you don’t have the resources to attend a higher institution then learn a trade or better still become an artisan.
I urge you to grab something and start doing today and the opposite sex will appreciate you and want to marry you. I tell you my dear, if every person who is physically challenged in our society becomes hardworking and earn well to take care of themselves and people around them, we’ll gradually forget that word ‘physically challenged’ and I’m looking forward to that soon.
When some people talk about the physically challenged, they present them as people who are good for nothing but things are changing and most of these people are coming up strong. Don’t be surprised if a cripple becomes the manager of an organisation or hold public office or own these organisations themselves because it is coming to that.
If you own an organisation where those who are physically challenged are more qualified and hardworking, will you promote the lazy man because he’s not physically challenged? So don’t bother yourself because we’ll gradually get to that age where disability will be a thing of the past and people can no longer segregate amongst the physically challenged.
Love conquers everything
— Nkiru Sylvanus, Actress
I can marry a physically challenged if I love him but he has to be hardworking for that to be possible. If he remains lazy because he feels that he’s physically challenged then he hasn’t got a point to make, he can’t even approach any woman for marriage. A man has to be financially stable before he can talk about marriage.
And incase you don’t know, physically challenged people are gradually taking over vital positions in the society so nobody should take it as an excuse for laziness.
I loved one before
— Moses Armstrong, Actor
There’s nothing wrong with falling in love with a physically challenged person because they’re people just like me and you. I’ve had the opportunity of loving a cripple girl while I was in school and then I was always willing to assist her in every little way I could. We didn’t get married because we parted ways after school not because she’s crippled. If a physically challenged has all the qualities I want in a woman, why not?
Why not
—Kehinde Olorunyomi, Actress and script writer
The trend as it concerns physical disability in our society is changing as more people are beginning to accept the physically challenged as life partners. But the truth remains that everything that happens in our society has a motive behind it. My dear have you taken time to check out all these people who marry physically challenged people?
Do you know the motive behind these marriages? Certain persons would agree to marry them for different reasons far from the love they preach. We’ve heard stories where parents of a physically challenged would make certain promises to their supposed life partners for the marriage to hold. Let me just say that some people are bought over to marry such people.
I’m sorry to say this but love here in Nigeria hasn’t got to that stage where there’s no motive back stage. Any woman would jump at Ayefele, Cobhams or Aki and Paw Paw because they’re celebrities and hardworking not because one love is pushing her from anywhere. Likewise any man would jump at a bank manager with a fat salary account who’s on a wheelchair. Our people are bent on what they would get out of any relationship, we’re yet to get to that stage where true and pure love can thrive.
For me, I can marry a physically challenged person who is hardworking and intelligent. I belong to that school of thought which says that there’s no disability in the physically challenged, no excuse for laziness. Be active and I’ll marry you disabled or not.
Will marry a blindman if…
— Christy Ubong, Student
My problem is not whether man is blind or deaf and dumb but whether he’s hard working because money has always been the cause of many broken homes in our society. Most of the failed marriages in our society today would have survived if the people involve both earn well in their various businesses or jobs but physically challenged.
The story is even worse when it is the man that earns less or nothing at all because the man is supposed to be the head of the home even when it comes to finance. So I don’t see anything wrong in marrying a blind man who can take good care of me. Marriage is certified by God and not what the eyes can see.
If the spinal chord is okay
— Segun Johnson, Businessman
As long as the disability does not have anything to do with spinal cord injury, whether she’s lame or blind but can still carry out her duty as my wife, I’ll marry her. I mentioned spinal cord because that one may not allow her to satisfy me in bed and it will be useless for me to say I’m married and still look for another woman to fill that lagoon. True love is beyond what we can imagine that is why we may not really be able to predict who we marry.
